Joel 2:28,29 28 "And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days”.
DATE OF THE BOOK
Late preexilic date: 609-586 B.C § Joel chapter 2 seems to picture the Babylonians vividly enough that he did not need to specifically identify them in the chapter; their presence is imposing.
PURPOSES FOR THE BOOK:
A. To warn Judah of the coming Day of the Lord when judgment will get worse for Judah and the nations of the world
B. To urge Judah to repent of their sins
C. To proclaim a future time when complete restoration will come to the nation
Chapter 2: The nation is called from things below to things above
1. verses 1-14 - The priests should alarm the nation with the near approach of the Divine judgments, and the power of repentance.
2. verses 12-27 - God is ready to help his people; and he waits to be gracious.
3. verses 28-32 – The Promise of the Holy Spirit, and of the Future Mercies
"...I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions".
==>Pour out: Anointing. If people respond to God’s call (from below to above), then God responds by anointing them (from above to below).
1. Anointing in the Old Testament: Priests, Prophets, Judges and Kings (leaders of the nation)
Priests - Exodus 30:30 (NKJV) 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.
Kings and Prophets - 1 Kings 19:16 (NKJV) 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
Judges (before Kings) - Judges 3:10a (NKJV) 10 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel.

1 Samuel 16:13 (NKJV) - David

JESUS’ water baptism - Matthew 3:16 (NKJV) 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
The Day of Pentecost - Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV) 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. utterance. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Ephesians - Acts 19:5-6 (NKJV) 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (from below to above = repentance) 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. (from above to below = Anointing)
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy
1. God is blessing the family 2. God is present 3. God cares about His people
Your old men shall dream dreams
1.God is bringing Hope 2.God transforms people 3.Nothing is impossible to God
Your young men shall see visions.
1.God shares His will 2.God is expecting the Commitment of the YOUTH

•Visions = Commitment to Serve
